October 2012 I was a sixteen year old kid, living in new York city, who always loved sports and martial arts and acrobatics. Me and my buddies would always practice acrobats and martial art moves, we would watch in movies. And I would constantly watch videos online, of martial artists and acrobatics, and would try to do these moves myself. At one point me and my buddies thought that we should sign up to a martial art school so we can really learn these moves properly, and be well trained martial artists and athletes. So we started to think of what martial art to do, and of course, as kids, we wanted the coolest martial art, with the coolest kicks and flips. So the first art that came to our mind was of course capoeira, obviously because of its stunning spinning kicks and air flips. And this was really great for me, since I always wanted to learn acrobatics as well as martial arts. So for me this was a win win situation.
So me and my buddies began our search online, for a capoeira school in NYC, and found a really nice, small school in NYC that was just right for us. During the three years I trained in NYC I put in a lot of work and effort in my training, and got to learn what a well trained, disciplined, respectful capoeirista (capoeira participant) should be. I was a consistent, and hard working capoeirista, and got to go up in ranks rather pretty quickly.
August 2015 as a nineteen year old kid I decided that I want to go study to the state of Israel, and went to study in Jerusalem. As a capoeirista, I couldn’t just stop my training, so I began my search for a capoeira school in Jerusalem. I found out via online that, Abada capoeira, a world wide capoeira school, had a branch in Jerusalem. So I made my way over to the studio in Jerusalem, and signed up for a two week trial, and test, to see if the school was fit for me. And to my benefit I found the school to be a great capoeira training center, which was perfect for me. And as a capoeirista with a decent amount of experience, I can tell you, that the school was well disciplined, full of respect and love, and an instructor with great energy and passion for capoeira. Although Abada capoeira is a world wide school, with its own rules, the jerusalem branch still has the comforting feeling of an individual school. And me as a student originally from a different capoeira group, felt very welcomed by the students as well as the instructor.
As a capoeirista training for about three and a half years, I feel that besides the awesome martial arts, dance, acrobatics and music aspects that capoeira taught me, I can say, capoeira taught me a lot in life. Capoeira taught me respect, discipline, structure, love and grace. Capoeira took a big role in my emotional and social development, and I am happy that I was able to make capoeira a part of my life, because I wouldn’t be the person I am today with out capoeira.
